Our mini-society unit
During our four-week Mini-Society Unit, each child became involved in a unique educational experience dealing with economics and decision making. Our classroom become a new country created by our class. Our class brainstormed and selected the country name of "Smile Central." Students set up and named their own economic system, developed their own monetary standards, and determined the rules necessary to operate our new society. Other concepts incorporated included the rule of the majority, taxes, the value of money, how a banking system works, the steps to running a store, business and copyright licenses, contracts, cooperation, and compromise.
Each member of the country was allowed to open a store as long as the rules set forth by the country were followed. Students were able to either provide a service or make something to sell at their store. The market days provided another way for the citizens to earn money in addition to their salaries for doing their mini-society jobs. Our shops were opened for two days and we invited all third graders, second grade students, and classroom parents in to shop for mini-society products and services.
Thank you for your mini-society support and good business! Enjoy the video below from one of our mini-society shops.
